Decoding FAST Strategy Through Global Data & Exclusive Interview
TV5MONDE official website (tv5monde.com) — FAST channels Voyage, Chefs and Info featured prominently on the homepage
French public broadcaster TV5MONDE has surpassed 40 million global viewers just over a year after launching its FAST (Free Ad-Supported Streaming Television) service — a speed of growth unthinkable in the linear TV era.
At the same time, research firm Omdia forecasts global FAST revenues will nearly double from $6 billion in 2025 to $11 billion by 2030. As cord-cutting accelerates and Connected TV (CTV) consumption surges, FAST has moved from a secondary distribution channel to a primary axis of the global media landscape.
Patrice Courtaban, EVP of Global Growth & Business Development at TV5MONDE and CEO of TV5MONDE USA, sat down with StreamTV Insider ahead of the StreamTV Europe conference in Lisbon this April to lay out the full picture of the network's FAST strategy.
"The growth of AVOD and FAST has helped us reach new viewers who are moving away from traditional Pay TV and spending more time with free content on connected TVs and digital devices," Courtaban said. Just over 12 months after launching, the network is already seeing strong momentum not only in the Americas and Europe, but also in newer markets like the MENA region, India, Australia, and across APAC.
The Plex Deal: Three Channels, Four Continents at Once
In February 2026, TV5MONDE signed a distribution agreement with Plex, launching three FAST channels simultaneously across Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Latin America.
Channel | Genre | Markets | Subtitles |
|---|---|---|---|
TV5MONDE Chefs | Food & culinary travel | Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK,Australia, New Zealand, Latin America (Argentina, Mexico) | English & Spanish(Portuguese & Arabic coming soon) |
TV5MONDE Voyage | Travel, fashion & lifestyle | Same as above | Same as above |
TV5MONDE Info | International news & current affairs | Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy,Spain, UK + U.S. (Sling Freestream) | English & Spanish |
On the channel development rationale, Courtaban explained: "When we started developing our FAST offering, we focused on content that really reflects the DNA of TV5MONDE, with themes that could resonate broadly and travel well across different markets and cultures. Lifestyle quickly stood out as a natural fit." TV5MONDE Voyage and TV5MONDE Chefs are now performing not only in core markets but also in the United States, Latin America and the Middle East.
The Biggest Surprise: 'News Crosses Borders Too'
The most closely watched revelation from the interview was the unexpected performance of TV5MONDE Info, the news channel. "We initially thought news would remain mostly local, with audiences prioritizing national sources," Courtaban said.
The reality was different. TV5MONDE Info is doing well in markets including the United States, Italy, India and Australia — markets with no natural Francophone affinity.
"We initially thought news would remain mostly local, with audiences prioritizing national sources. But the channel is doing well in markets like the United States, Italy, India, and Australia, which shows there is a real appetite for international perspectives."
— Patrice Courtaban
TV5MONDE Info combines the network's own news programming with content from seven partner public broadcasters: TV5 Québec Canada, Radio-Canada, Télé-Québec, France Télévisions, RTS (Switzerland), RTBF (Belgium) and TV Monaco. Key programmes include 64 minutes, TV5MONDE Le Journal, L'Invité and Objectif Monde.
Why It Worked: Six Factors Behind 40 Million Users
TV5MONDE's FAST success is not accidental. Cross-referencing Courtaban's interview with Omdia market data reveals a structural formula — one that any non-English-language broadcaster with global ambitions can learn from. No single factor explains the result. Brand, content, distribution, language access and editorial philosophy all aligned simultaneously.
The first lever was 40 years of brand equity. Decades of continuous global distribution across 217 countries gave TV5MONDE negotiating power on platform
